The Student Lens: The Lindsay Lee Interview

Hello Everyone, and welcome to the Student Lens. Today, I will be featuring the amazing dancer, Lindsay, who has been a consistent dancer and attendee at Elemental Studios. Like many people who attend Elemental Studios, Lindsay has shown her determination, drive, curiosity, and openness to the many styles that are offered at Elemental.

Lindsay is originally from Albany, New York, and has found a way to dance her way into the hearts of all the people she comes across since moving to the Colorado area. I wanted to chat with her about her experience with dance, as well as why she fell in love with the studio and community offered at Elemental Studios. So, let's get started with the questions.

1. What is a fun fact about yourself that we should know?

Lindsay: "I was 10 minutes away from being born in an IHOP bathroom."

2. What made you fall in love with dance?

Lindsay: "When I dance, I feel like I am an artist, an athlete, and a detective all at the same time. trying to solve the ultimate puzzle of the mind-body connection. I love hearing beats in the music and the emotions evoked by the lyrics, hearing how the teacher interprets them, and explains how to move from piece to piece, and then trying to get my brain and body to match at once. Many days the "artistry and athleticism" are more like finger painting and pee wee football when I look in the mirror but that's part of my love for dance. The growth, the journey, and the pushing my limits through my mental limits and self-judgment."

3. What made you fall in love with Elemental?

Lindsay: "The thing that prevented me from coming sooner was the fear that others would judge me. That they'd look at me and go "ugh, why is this person here, she's so bad, she's slowing us down, Why does she move like that?" The second I showed up at class, my fears flew out the door. Elemental is such a wonderful, supportive, and fun place. The teachers always emphasize that class is about growth and training and the journey. None of us are finished products. It has been incredble to develop alongside my fellow Elementalists!"

4. What is your favorite class right now?

Lindsay: "Since day 1, Aiyana's Intermediate/Advanced Hip-Hop has been my favorite. It's been a great push for me as an intermediate dancer, and Aiyana's choreography focuses so heavily on musicality. Her class forces you to take a moment and really consider the intention behind the movement, the details in the music, and how they overlap. Plus Aiyana's supportive and fun teaching style makes it easy to try difficult things."

5. Do you dance as a hobby or professionally?

Lindsay: "As a hobby! It's such a source of fun and joy for me. I'm always seeking ways to deepen that and may explore joining a crew or even teaching in the future, but for now, it's my favorite hobby."

6. Who is a dancer that inspires you to dance?

Lindsay: "Paris Goebel, A Genius, artist, and mastermind."

7. What do you look forward to the most when coming to Elemental Studios?

Lindsay: "The people, honestly! Once I started introducing myself to new and familiar faces and got more invested in cheering on my fellow dancers during groups, I found my love for Elemental through the roof. Elemental is not cliquey at all: the community is there and ready for you to jump in. You just need to introduce yourself! If you see me around the studio, stop me, and say hello if I don't do it first."

Thank you to Lindsay for taking the time to invest in the Student Lens, and I look forward to seeing you in class and interviewing more students!
