Stepping into Success: An Interview with Heels and Afro-Fusion Diva Randall Nunez
Afro-Fusion and dancing in heels have two things in common: they bring together communities to create art and express self-confidence that changes the lives of dancers all across the world. Today, I chatted with The Randall Nunez, a Masterclass instructor for Elemental Studios, to talk about how Randall got started with dance, the company TRIBE, and inspiring many dancers and themself as they continue their dance journey.
So, let's meet Randall, shall we?
Hello, my name is Randall Nunez! I’m a professional choreographer, dancer, creative director, singer, actor, and more. I’m located out in Orlando, but originally from NYC. I’ve worked with The Weeknd, SuperBowl, HBO Max, Amazon Prime, Rletto, and more.
I started dancing professionally in 2019. I never thought of doing dance a day in my life. I did theater and choir my whole life, which had some type of dance in it, but nothing like this! I took a chance on myself and trained with many dancers in different cities. I just focused because I fell in love, and I knew I wanted it! Here we are now, TRIBE Official, going worldwide!
I am so honored that I get to interview such a talented and amazing soul like Randall, so let’s get into the questions, shall we?
1. What inspired you to start Tribe, and how has it been being able to inspire others through the art of dance?
Randall: “TRIBE was a dream of mine for a while, initially started as a plan for a clothing brand! But transitioned once I started dancing! Being able to inspire others, honestly, is the reason why I think making an impact on others' lives and being a part of the healing process, helping them see themselves in the light that’s destined for them! It’s brought many together in so many spaces and different parts of the world to express and interpret art in every unique individual way, yet still connected! Leaving no one alone, realizing they’re not the first nor the last, and they have a TRIBE to always call home and are welcome too!”
2. What is something you learned about yourself through your dance journey?
Randall: “I am capable. I am worthy. I am a force. I’m impactful the moment I believe in myself and realize I’m in the spaces I’m meant to be in and shine my light unapologetically.”
Randall: “Afro-fusion, which in reality is a fusion of different styles/cultures of AfroDance, DanceHall/Reggae, Latin/Dembow, and just anything that feels good, wasn’t something I was taught, just born into. Growing up being mixed myself and around all cultures, just my upbringing! Heels, I was obsessed with Aliya Janell’s heels class in Orlando, which was the first official dance class I’ve ever taken in my life.”
4. What advice can you pass on to future dancers who are exploring new styles?
Randall: “Being uncomfortable brings new elevations and the best versions of yourself! You’ll soon become comfortable and unstoppable! Confidence, delusion, and self-awareness get you really far! But most importantly, do the internal work because your external is a reflection of your internal, and you won’t be able to do any form of art until you know who you are! Art is expression!”
5. Who are your dance icons or people who inspired you to start on your dance journey?
Randall: “Many, but to name a few, Aliya Janell, Kiira Harper, Cisco, Yanis Marshall, Audd, Ari MF G, Shemeka Ann, Judith McCarty, BadgyalCassie, Latrice, my students, peers, and last but not least, my sister!”
6. What is something that sparks your creativity when creating a routine for a class you are teaching?
Randall: “Music and emotions! Storylines I have to connect and create! Listen to the song, laying down on the floor, with my eyes closed, or putting myself in a small space with the lights off!”
7. What is your teaching style like?
Randall: “Warm-up/Conditioning, Across the floor, Ice Breaker, Choreography, and Perform.”
8. What does dance mean to you?
Randall: “Everything. Passion, love, and energy.”
9. What do you do outside of dance in your free time?
Randall: “Meditate, touch some grass to realign, sing, rollerskate, go-kart, etc just random fun stuff!”
Randall: “Instagram, @kingdito_ and @_tribeofficial”.
